In 1985 I started a company called Smith Industrial Equipment Co. and began selling equipment to the metal stamping industry in Michigan. The product line was die-protection equipment, tonnage monitors, controls, material handling, safety and ect. The business was very successful and in 1986 I started selling air shakers. The first one was a shaker called a TP 50 which was a very good shaker. Then in 1992 I met a German shaker manufacturer and after training in Germany began selling his product we upgraded to his sons product three years later. By 1995 we were spending 4 hrs a day repairing air shakers for our customers and decided to build our own electric shaker. It was a very good shaker but because it was a center mounted unit there was some of the same problems the air shakers had. These problems were caused by more weight on one side then the other or off center loading this put strain on the bearings and caused premature wear. We upgraded our shaker so it was run from both sides of the press and this solved the problem. Our shaker has 2 cams if the bar that moves back and forth is 96” or smaller and 3 cams if it is between 97” and 160” we just quoted a 240” shaker with 5 cams. The cams are made out of tool steal and are hardened after machining so if a cam follower goes bad the cam track should not be damaged. The linear bearings are made out of a compound called Frelon Gold and the manufacturer has rated them at 270 times that of a roller bearing. Our cost is less than half of our main competitor.
